Jen Clarke is a content designer/content strategist/UX writer based in Memphis, TN.
What does that mean?
I do the words.
Though my childhood dream of becoming a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter never quite crystallized, millions of app and website users have read and interacted with words I’ve written.
I choose language that is findable, usable, readable, and accessible so people can fulfill tasks and accomplish goals without stress.
Here’s what I do:
- Inventory and audit content to keep messaging clear, fresh, and relevant.
- Identify opportunities for scale and efficiency using structured content.
- Develop and document guidelines and standards to ensure all content creators are using a consistent vocabulary.
- Train, coach, and advise junior writers and content editors in best practices.
- Advocate for users so their needs don’t get lost in a sea of business requirements.
- Use SEO and analytics tools and collaborate with qualitative and quantitative research specialists to inform, validate, and optimize content.
- Create sitemaps, wireframes, journey maps, process documents, briefs, and more Excel spreadsheets than I ever could have dreamed.
Here’s what I write:
- Headings and body copy
- Navigation elements
- Calls to action
- Error messages and alerts
- Form field labels
- Instruction and onboarding
I’ve also written these:
- Content calendars
- Social and email marketing
- News and editorial
- Corporate communications
- Blogs and content marketing
I’ve worked in newsrooms, small agencies, and big corporations. (I also spent a lot of time behind a bar, where I got my PhD in Understanding People.) I enjoy watching ideas grow into strategies and evolve into actions. As long as I’m learning, I’m thriving.
A little bit about me
I love running, reading, and napping with my two cats. I’m behind on every TV show, but somehow I find time for “Parks and Recreation” reruns. Maybe, in 20 years, I’ll finally finish “The West Wing.”
I’m available for freelance work. Email me your ideas, projects, and podcast recommendations.
